Home Inventory Made Easy
We don't like to think of thieves or disasters hitting our homes. But if it happened, could you list all your possessions missing or destroyed? Creating an inventory of your personal property now could help greatly in the event of a claim later. Without one, certain valued possessions could be overlooked or forgotten.

It is fairly easy to do, especially with a video camera. Walk around your home with the camera rolling, describing each item as you go. Note how much things cost, especially the more expensive items such as appliances, furniture, jewelry, china, clothes, etc. This create a highly accurate record of your valuables.

If you do not have access to a video camera, a still camera works nearly as well. Information such as serial numbers, make and model, and date purchased can be written on the back of each photograph. This helps in determining the item's replacement cost.

If you have receipts, note on them where the item was purchased and keep them with your inventory. Any supporting information will make the claims process and property replacement easier. Keeping your list in your home computer allows for quick updating.

Many people discover they have a lot more "stuff" than they imagined and it may not all be fully covered on the insurance policy. Valuables such as jewelry, furs, firearms and collections can be insured separately with a scheduled personal property endorsement, up to the limits you select. Store your list and/or video in a safe deposit box. Other good locations include your business office or with a friend or relative who lives in a different neighborhood. Update your inventory annually and remember to keep receipts on new purchases made throughout the year.

Beware of Dryer Fire
Maintaining the safety of your clothes dryer takes more than cleaning out the lint trap after each load of laundry.

Birds, rodents or insects sometimes enter from the outside exhaust portal; their nests along with lint can build up in the vent. An obstruction can cause drying time to increase and overheating to occur. This increases energy consumption because the machine has to run longer to dry the clothes and can also cause fires in the dryer or the dryer duct. If yours is a gas dryer, there is the additional risk from blockage or improper venting with carbon monoxide seeping back into the home.

To improve the safety and efficiency of your clothes dryer:
  • Regularly vacuum the dust and lint around, under and behind the dryer. If moving the appliance, unplug it first.
  • Occasionally clean the dryer vent, dryer blower and outside exhaust portal of accumulated lint and debris.
  • Clean the lint trap after each use.
Some dryer vents are relatively short and straight and can be cleaned easily by the do-it-yourselfer. However, a long length or inaccessible run of duct may require the use of special tools and equipment and should be performed by a duct or vent cleaning professional.
